Smiles & Frowns Kids View: COPPA Compliance

PART 1:  COPPA data compliance

Smiles & Frowns Kids View is a companion app that works with Smiles & Frowns to allow children to view their progress on their own devices. Now, children can easily follow their own progress on Smiles & Frowns boards their parents, teachers or other guardians have created. 

We created Smiles & Frowns KIds view as a separate app specifically to make it fully COPPA compliant. COPPA is the Children’s Privacy Protection Act that requires specific regulations to protect the privacy of children 13 years old and younger. 

Smiles & Frowns Kids View does not serve ads or use any ad tracking, does not use any third party analytics, and does not share any data or information of any kind with any third parties for any purposes whatsoever. The only information the app maintains is the data needed to enable core functionality of the app itself.

In addition, a Smiles & Frowns Kids View account can only be initiated by an adult from his or her own device, and only with that adult’s explicit permission. Without granting such permission, a Kids View account cannot be created. Every account is also password protected.

PART 2: Parental Consent & Terms of Use

Smiles & Frowns Kids View is not a standalone app. Rather, it is a companion app that can sync with a full version of Smiles & Frowns so children can safely view their progress on their own devices. To create a working account, parents must review our COPPA compliance statement and give explicit consent for their children to use Smiles & Frowns Kids View

To create a Smiles & Frowns Kids View account, an adult first creates a behavior board that includes the child with their host Smiles & Frowns app. After this is done, the adult can then access the Kids View account tools by editing the child’s profile. These screen expliciting describes our COPPA compliant data policies.

If the adult wishes to create a Kids View account, he or she can then create a private password to accompany a login code that has been provided. The password will be encrypted and completely unknown to the administrators at Smiles & Frowns.

Finally, the adult can choose to create the child’s account, and is the given one final statement about COPPA compliance. The adult must explicitly opt in to create the child’s Kids View account. The adult also can choose to learn more, which will take them to the set of privacy statements for Smiles & Frowns, including this Smiles & Frowns Kids View COPPA compliance statement. This full set of privacy policies is also available through a Setting link within the Smiles & Frowns app, and on the app description in the iOS App Store.
